WEATHER CONDITIONS

Season phenology: average

Weather conditions:

Spring was average in timing, but developed rapidly, and snow melted completely during 2-3 days by 4.06. Temperatures rised were above freezing point from 22.05. Generally, season was warm and dry. Adverse weather did not occur. June was very warm and mosquitoes emerged in mass a week earlier than in 2003, on 20.06.

Season temperature: warm
Season humidity: dry
Date of 50% snow-cover:
Date of ice-break on rivers: 4-5.06
Date of final loss of snow: 4.06

BIOTIC CONDITIONS

Rodents abundance evaluation:

average

Breeding conditions:

Arctic Foxes bred in small numbers, while most of the animals were non-breeders. Rough-legged Buzzard, Snowy Owl and Pomarine Skua did not breed, but unusual for the site record of nesting Short-eared Owls was made.
Bewick's Swans nested at a lower density, 0.98 nest/sq.km, than in early seasons 2002-2003. Ross's Gulls and Grey Phalaropes bred in 2003, but not in 2004. Breeding ducks included Pintail, Greater Scaup, Long-tailed Duck, King and Spectacled eiders, all successfully. Spectacled Eider nested at a density 1.89 nest/sq.km, and reproductive success was high, 28.7%.
Nesting waders included Grey Plover, Turnstone, Curlew Sandpiper (lower density than in 2003), Pectoral Sandpiper, Sharp-tailed Sandpiper (unconfirmed), Dunlin, Red-necked Phalarope and Long-billed Dowitcher.

Rodent dynamics:

Vole numbers started to increase in 2004, while lemmings were not recorded.
